The Volkswagen Tiguan and Atlas Have Known Issues and Poor Reliability Scores

If you were in the market within the last few years for a crossover compact SUV chances are you are aware of, and possibly considered, the Volkswagen Tiguan.  If you wanted a larger SUV perhaps you considered the Tiguan’s bigger brother, the Volkswagen Atlas.  Many consumers have purchased these vehicles and found them to meet their needs.  That is, unfortunately, not to say that all have been happy or satisfied with the purchase.

Consumer Reports is a well respected publication that spends significant resources evaluating the automotive industry in efforts to provide consumers objective reviews for information purposes when car shopping.  While the Tiguan and Atlas have received positive reviews with respect to styling, features, and performance, Consumer Reports scores for these vehicles with respect to their reliability and predicted reliability is quite low.  In large part based on the reliability concerns the trusted review publication gave each SUV a mere 61/100 for the 2020 Model Year.  In fact, this score landed the Atlas at number 19 out of 23 SUV’s tested by Consumer Reports.

Engine and transmission concerns were the primary culprits for such low scores.  Both the Tiguan and Atlas received 1 out of 5 in predicted reliability scores.  Owners of past model year Tiguans have complained of transmission issues and defective power equipment.  Consumer Reports has seen no indication that such issues have been addressed and will change.  With respect to the Atlas, the vehicle also received its 1 out of 5 predicted reliability score based on the fact that it is related to the Tiguan but also because having only been released in 2018 there is simply not enough data yet to establish a higher rating.

While Volkswagen would like to argue that consumers are generally happy with these vehicles – and many certainly are – there are enough complaints from owners to have both vehicles land on Consumer Reports 10 least reliable vehicle lists in 2019.  The Volkswagen Tiguan landed at number 6 on the list; with the Atlas one spot higher at number 5.  In addition to the engine and transmission concerns referred to above, the list indicates that owners report problems with power equipment, in-car electronics, suspension, climate systems, and fuel/emission systems in these vehicles.

With every day these vehicles get closer to the end of their warranty periods and if someone finds himself/herself as the owner of one of these vehicles with such problems remaining unfixed that owner has rather costly repair expenses to unfortunately look forward to.

The Chevrolet Camaro’s Widely Reported Transmission Problems

The Chevrolet Camaro is one of the most iconic muscle cars ever made and has its share of diehard fans.  With several different model types – ranging from a base model to souped up track cars – there are various trim options to meet many needs in a package that many find appealing.

No matter which trim you choose your Camaro, it will likely be equipped with GM’s 8L45 or 8L90 8 speed transmission given that most consumers do not prefer manual transmissions in this day and age.  The 8L45 and 8L90 were designed to establish up to 5 percent greater efficiency when compared to the previous 6L45 and 6L50 six speed transmissions they replaced.  The transmissions weigh less and have gear ratios with smaller steps between gears.  General Motors, LLC was happy with these advancements and considered the transmissions to be a step forward.

That is not to say, however, that such transmissions have been without their issues.  Since they were introduced into the 2016 model year, the sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro’s transmission has had its share of known, widespread issues.  Drivers complain of gears that shift too hard or too early.  Consumers also complain of violent shakes, jerks, and/or hard shifts.

While General Motors, LLC states that the issues have since been resolved, many customers who have purchased 2016 and later model years apparently disagree.  A quick online search related to Chevrolet Camaro transmission problems reveals that owners across the country have reported ongoing transmission issues in their 2016 and newer Camaro vehicles.

Websites such as www.carcomplaints.com and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s websites, www.nhtsa.gov and www.safercar.gov, reveal hundreds of consumer complaints for abnormal transmission problems such as harsh shifting, improper shifting, etc. for 2016-current model Camaro vehicles.  Online forums and car websites such as www.carbuzz.com and www.motorbiscuit.com as well as Youtube videos document consumers’ frustrations with the Camaro transmissions.

General Motors, LLC has published several Technical Service Bulletins (“TSBs”) over the years in these vehicles related to repair procedures affecting the transmission.  The fact that these TSBs exist and have been published by General Motors, LLC indicates that it is well aware of these ongoing transmission problems in these vehicles.

Indeed, transmission replacements can be one of the most costly repairs to a motor vehicle.  One report indicates that a transmission replacement for these vehicles would cost $6,000 on average to repair out of warranty.  With every day these vehicles get closer to the end of their warranty periods and if such a problem remains unfixed in such a vehicle the owner has rather costly repair expenses to unfortunately look forward to.

The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee Widely Reported Transmission Problems

Since it was introduced in the 2014 model year, the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee’s transmission has had its share of known, widespread issues.  Notably, a class action was filed related to the 2014-15 model years after customers complained of faulty shifter and shifting issues.  Indeed, this problem received much media attention as it was alleged to have been a potential cause for the accident and tragic death of the actor Anton Yelchin.

The ZF 9HP is a nine-speed automatic transmission built by ZF Friedrichshafen AG subsidiary ZF transmissions in South Carolina.  While it was designed to improve fuel consumption compared to a six speed automatic transmission, consumers started having problems with it from its launch date. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee was the world’s first passenger vehicle to contain the new transmission, but problems with the transmission were a reported basis for the launch delay of the 2014 Cherokee and the underlying basis for technical service bulletins designed to address the known problem after the vehicle had begun being distributed.

While FCA US, LLC states that the issues have since been resolved and model years after 2015 do not experience the same concerns, many customers who have purchased 2016 and later model years apparently disagree.  A quick online search related to Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee transmission problems reveals that owners across the country have reported ongoing transmission issues in their 2016 and newer Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles.

Websites such as www.carcomplaints.com and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s websites, www.nhtsa.gov and www.safercar.gov, reveal hundreds of consumer complaints for abnormal transmission problems such as harsh shifting, improper shifting, etc. for 2016-current model year Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.

FCA US, LLC has published several Technical Service Bulletins (“TSBs”) over the years in these vehicles related to repair procedures which include software updates for the Powertrain Control Module affecting the transmission.  The fact that these TSBs exist and have been published by FCA US, LLC indicates that it is well aware of these ongoing transmission problems in these vehicles.

Indeed, transmission replacements can be one of the most costly repairs to a motor vehicle.  One report indicates that a transmission replacement for these vehicles would cost $7,500 on average to repair out of warranty.  With every day these vehicles get closer to the end of their warranty periods and if such a problem remains unfixed in such a vehicle the owner has rather costly repair expenses to unfortunately look forward to.
